What to Wear and Bring on a Husky Safari

What each Rovaniemi husky safari lends you and what to bring: overalls, boots, mittens, layers, the cold, and the weight, age and driver rules safari by safari.

Updated November 2026

Most Rovaniemi husky safaris lend you the outer layer; what goes underneath is yours. If you have no winter gear at all, book one that lists the whole kit: Apukka Resort Oy’s Rovaniemi: Apukka Husky Adventure 6km, self-driven, from US$244 a person (checked November 2026), lends a thermal overall, thermal boots, woollen socks and mittens.

Transfers are included, and the sled is yours to drive: “Guides do not drive the sleds.”

What to wear underneath

Illustration: two adults in thick thermal overalls, hats and mittens standing beside a wooden husky sled on a snowy kennel yard, a calm husky team in harness lying on the snow in front of the sled
Illustration. Dressed for the sled: overalls over your own layers, a hat and mittens.

The overall goes over your own clothes, so dress as you would for a long winter walk: warm layers, a hat that covers your ears, thick socks, and your own gloves or mittens if the listing does not lend them.

The cold is real. A guest on Safartica's safari at minus 30 in December 2025 was glad of the advice to wear the cold-weather layer over already warm clothes. On Apukka Resort Oy's one guest wrote of minus 20 that “It was really cold even with the suits on” (December 2025), and another could not feel their feet after the ride (January 2026). In Levi, Keo Wilderness may reschedule or refund the tour at −30 °C or colder.

Weight, age and who may drive

These rules decide who can come more than the clothing does, and they differ from sled to sled.

  • Apukka Resort Oy (6 km and early-winter 3 km): a sled holds at most 2 adults and 1 to 3 children, 250 kg in total, seated one behind the other on a sled 55 cm wide. One adult with one child: the child must be 9 to 10 years old; with 2 or 3 children the oldest must be at least 12. Infants and toddlers need their own adult passenger, not the driver.
  • A Day In Lapland: only adults (18+) drive; no children under 4.
  • Lapland Royal Adventures: up to 2 adults and 2 children a sled, and the driver cannot be changed during the ride; not for children under 2.
  • Rovaniemi Insider's 5 km: up to 2 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children, a sled, with a driver switch midway.
  • Safartica: 2 adults per team, children in the sleigh; no weight or age limit stated.
  • Keo Wilderness, Levi: not for children under 4, people over 70 or people over 95 kg.

Several listings also exclude pregnant women and people with back or heart problems: Apukka Resort Oy names pregnancy, Rovaniemi Insider's 10 km pregnancy and back problems.
