Husky safaris from Rovaniemi
How the Safaris Differ
Who drives the sled, how long you are on it, what the day around it takes, the rules for children, and the snow.
Drive the sled, or sit in it
This is the first thing to decide, because the safaris split cleanly. On a self-drive safari you stand on the runners and steer while the dogs pull: Safartica’s musher shows you how before the start, and two adults share each team. On Apukka Resort Oy's 6 km safari, the guides do not drive the sleds at all.
On a passenger ride a musher drives and you sit. Beyond Arctic's ride is 3 km as a passenger, and Bearhill husky's ride in Santa Claus Village is 2.5 km, driven by an experienced musher. Passenger rides suit anyone who would rather not handle a team. A husky farm visit or a sled safari goes through the three kinds, kennel visits included.
How long you are on the sled

Less time than the stated duration suggests. Safartica’s safari is 1.5 hours, the ride itself about 20 to 30 minutes, and the transfer is not counted in the 1.5 hours. A guest in January 2026, collected in the city centre for a 10:30 safari, counted 4 hours 15 minutes from the centre and back, about half an hour of it on the sled.
The other safaris are built the same way. Apukka Resort Oy's safari lasts 3.5 hours: a 35-minute bus from Rovaniemi city centre or Santa Claus Village, 2 hours at the resort and 30 minutes back. Santa Claus Village is eight kilometres north of the centre, by the village’s own figure, and several operators collect from there. One hour, half a day or longer lists the ride time against the total for every safari we read.
What the price buys
Safartica’s price covers the transfers, winter clothing, the steering lesson, the 5 km ride and hot drinks with biscuits by the campfire afterwards, with guiding in English. Two people pay twice: the availability calendar showed US$421.18 for two adults. For a first drive of your own team, without a whole day gone, it is the one to book.
See start times for the 5 km safari
Every husky price here is per person, even though two adults share a sled. They run from US$70 for the 30-minute ride at Santa Claus Village to US$368 for Wonderlapland's 6 to 10 km drive. Husky safari prices sets out what each step up buys.
Children and the sled rules
Safartica takes children in the sleigh with two adults per team, with no age limit given. Other operators are stricter. Apukka Resort Oy allows at most 2 adults and 1 to 3 children a sled, 250 kg in all; one adult with one child needs the child to be 9 to 10 years old. A Day In Lapland lets only adults (18+) drive and does not take children under 4. What to wear and bring has the weight and age rules safari by safari.
The snow, and the light
Sled rides need snow, and the early-season calendars show it. On the dates we read, Apukka Resort Oy's safari had no availability on 27 November 2026 and Bearhill husky's ride none on 27 November or 10 December. Apukka Resort Oy's early-winter 3 km ride runs on trails made with stored snow from last winter.
The days are short too. On 1 December 2026 the sun is up in Rovaniemi from 10:13 to 13:58, and on 21 December from 11:07 to 13:22 (computed for Rovaniemi, Finnish time). Safartica’s 3:00 PM start on 30 November and 15 December falls in the last light or after sunset, and its 9:00 AM start on those dates is before sunrise. If daylight matters for photographs, pick a midday slot in December (11:00 AM and 1:00 PM were also on sale on 15 December), or go from February, when the sun rises at 9:19 and sets at 15:42 on 1 February 2027.
What reviewers mention
Safartica’s safari has 1,037 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.6. Of the 350 most recent, from 29 December 2025 to 18 September 2026, 23 give three stars or fewer. The complaints in those are about the day around the ride more than the ride: large groups (one guest in January 2026 counted 50 people), a guide on a snowmobile setting the pace in front, pickup mix-ups, and long waits for a short time with the dogs. The five-star reviews talk about steering the sled yourself, the overalls and boots that kept them warm, and the huskies.
Before you book
- Be on time. Safartica sends the meeting time and place in the confirmation email, and a missed meeting is a missed safari with no refund. Late arrivals on A Day In Lapland's safari are not refunded either.
- Who it does not suit. Apukka Resort Oy excludes pregnant women, people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users; A Day In Lapland also excludes people with heart problems. No exclusions are given for Safartica’s safari.
- Combos. A husky ride can come with reindeer, a snowmobile or an evening search for the lights: husky and reindeer or aurora combos compares them.
- Elsewhere in Lapland. Staying in Levi or Saariselkä? Husky safaris in Levi and Saariselkä covers the self-drive rides there.
- Cancelling. Every GetYourGuide safari here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.

Rovaniemi Husky Safari: Questions
Which safari, what it costs, driving or riding, how long, children, clothing, the season and multi-day trips.
For a first safari, Safartica's Rovaniemi: Daytime Husky Safari - 5 km self-driven, from US$211 a person (checked November 2026): a lesson from the musher, 5 km at the handlebar, winter clothing, transfers and hot drinks by the campfire. For a longer drive, Apukka Resort Oy's 6 km safari takes 3.5 hours with the bus. If you would rather ride than drive, Beyond Arctic's 3 km passenger ride comes with a photographer.
From US$70 a person for Bearhill husky's 30-minute ride in Santa Claus Village to US$368 for Wonderlapland's 6 to 10 km drive (checked November 2026). Self-drive safaris of 3 to 10 km with transfers and clothing mostly cost about US$210 to US$280 a person. Prices are per person even when two adults share a sled. See husky safari prices.
On a self-drive safari, yes: you steer and brake after a briefing, usually with a second adult in the sled. On Safartica's safari two adults share each team; on Apukka Resort Oy's 6 km safari the guides do not drive the sleds at all. On a passenger ride, such as Bearhill husky's ride in Santa Claus Village, a musher drives and you sit.
Shorter than the outing: about 20 to 30 minutes on Safartica's 1.5-hour safari, and 7 to 50 minutes across the safaris we read. The rest is the transfer, dressing, the briefing and time with the dogs. A Day In Lapland's 6 to 10 km safari gives about 30 to 50 minutes on the sled. See how long a husky safari is.
On most, yes, riding in the sled while an adult drives. Safartica takes children in the sleigh with two adults per team, with no age limit given. Apukka Resort Oy's safari allows 1 to 3 children with up to 2 adults, 250 kg in all, and one adult with one child needs the child to be 9 to 10. A Day In Lapland's safari does not take children under 4 and lets only adults drive.
Not the outer layer on most safaris: winter clothing is lent on Safartica's, and overalls and boots on Apukka Resort Oy's and A Day In Lapland's. Wear warm layers, a hat and thick socks underneath. Wonderlapland charges EUR 10 for the overall and boots, and Bearhill husky's ride lends no outer clothing. See what to wear.
When there is snow, and the early-season calendars were patchy when we read them. Apukka Resort Oy's 6 km safari had no availability on 27 November 2026, and Bearhill husky's ride none on 27 November or 10 December. Apukka Resort Oy's early-winter 3 km ride uses trails made with stored snow from last winter.
Not as a bookable tour on GetYourGuide or Viator. The longest Rovaniemi husky tour we found in November 2026 lasts 5 hours, and none of the Viator husky tours for the area ran overnight. For more time on the sled, the 6 to 10 km safaris give about 25 to 50 minutes of driving.
Only by chance, on the few combos that run into the evening. Northern Future Oy's two-part day adds an evening drive to two aurora spots from 20:00 to 23:30, with no guarantee of seeing the lights. In Saariselkä, Star Arctic Oy's safari stops in a tipi where you can hopefully spot them. See husky combos.
